Tunbridge Wells Borough Council History

The Borough of Tunbridge Wells, situated in the picturesque county of Kent, England, boasts a rich and storied history that has evolved over the centuries. Its story begins in the 17th century when the town’s significance grew with the discovery of chalybeate springs, believed to possess healing properties. This unique natural resource attracted visitors who came to partake in the therapeutic waters, aligning with the prevailing trend of spa tourism during that era. At its inception, the town was named “New Tunbridge” to distinguish it from the nearby town of Tonbridge.

In a significant milestone in 1909, King Edward VII bestowed upon Tunbridge Wells the coveted “Royal” prefix, recognizing its popularity as a spa destination. The town was henceforth referred to as “Royal Tunbridge Wells,” a designation that remains to this day.

While the town’s status as a spa destination may have waned over time, it has retained its allure as a significant tourist attraction. Visitors continue to be drawn by its rich history, architectural splendor, and the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.

The Tunbridge Wells Borough Council was established in 1974 as a local government entity following the reorganization of local government in England. It was created as a result of the Local Government Act 1972, which aimed to streamline local government structures and provide more efficient and accountable services to residents. The council was tasked with governing the Borough of Tunbridge Wells, which includes not only the town of Tunbridge Wells but also the surrounding areas.

From its inception, the council has been responsible for providing a wide range of local government services to the residents of the borough. This includes areas such as housing, planning and development, waste management, environmental services, leisure and culture, and more. The council’s responsibilities encompass both urban and rural areas, reflecting the diversity of the borough.
