Canterbury City Council History
On April 1, 1974, the district came into existence through the amalgamation of the pre-existing city of Canterbury with the Urban Districts of Whitstable and Herne Bay, along with the Bridge-Blean Rural District. The latter district encircled the city entirely, while the urban districts encompassed the coastal region to the north.
