Hackney History
In 1965, the areas of Shoreditch, Stoke Newington, and Hackney were amalgamated, giving rise to the contemporary London Borough of Hackney.
During the 17th century, Hackney and Stoke Newington were predominantly rural, while in contrast, Shoreditch was more densely developed and had established connections to London. However, all three areas underwent significant development during the 17th century. Subsequently, the arrival of the railway in the 19th century spurred further construction, transforming the region into a commuter suburb.
