Merton History
The London Borough of Merton gained its borough status in 1965 under the Local Government Act, resulting from the merger of the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon, the Municipal Borough of Mitcham, and Merton and Morden Urban District. Prior to this transformation, these areas were all part of the county of Surrey.
As of the 2021 Census, Merton had a population of 215,700, with a total of 99,750 households. Notably, Merton was one of only two boroughs where the number of households experienced a slight decrease over the ten-year period from 2001 to 2011, despite an increase in household size.
