Dover District History

Dover, nestled on the southeastern coast of Kent, England, is a prominent coastal town and a major ferry port, connecting travelers to Calais, France. Perched high above the town, Dover Castle, initially constructed as a fortification against potential Channel invasions, presides over the landscape, encompassing the expansive Secret Wartime Tunnels, steeped in historical significance. Additionally, the iconic White Cliffs of Dover stand as emblematic guardians, protecting Britain at its closest point to continental Europe. Dover is positioned to the southeast of Canterbury and to the east of Maidstone. It serves as the administrative center of the Dover District and is home to the pivotal Port of Dover. The town’s name originates from the River Dour, which gracefully winds its way through the area.

In recent years, Dover has witnessed a series of transformations, including the introduction of a high-speed rail link to London, the establishment of new retail spaces such as the St James’ area, opened in 2018, and the rejuvenation of the promenade and beachfront. Further enhancements took place in 2019, featuring a new 500-meter Pier to the west of the Harbour and the unveiling of a new Marina, all part of a substantial £330 million investment in the area. Employment in Dover is substantially driven by the Port of Dover, as well as tourism, with a particular focus on the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. Dover is classified as a Large-Port Town due to its substantial port traffic volumes, despite having a relatively low urban population.
